From Adversity to Advocacy: My Personal Journey to Purpose

Hey everybody, it’s time for us to get to know each other a bit better. I’m Drew Bushman, and today, I want to share my personal journey with you—a journey that has shaped not only who I am but also the purpose behind this blog.
Dreams vs. Reality
During my first summer of law school I accepted a summer internship with a prestigious estate planning law firm in California. It was a significant milestone, a step closer to what I believed would be a fulfilling career. However, pretty much as soon as I got there, I was hit by a stark realization—a disconnect between the dreams I had before entering law school and the harsh reality of being a lawyer.
I had envisioned making a profound difference in people’s lives, but the practice of law, at least then and what I’ve have observed since, felt incredibly transactional. It didn’t seem to serve our clients’ deeper needs, and I yearned for more meaning in my work.

A Personal Journey of Challenge and Resilience
To understand why I felt this way, you need to know a bit about my background. I come from a blended family of 16 children. My dad was a farmer, and my mom stayed home to raise us. What I didn’t know then, and what we soon found out, was that my mom was silently battling prescription drug addiction and alcoholism.
When tragedy struck, it was like the rug was pulled out from under us. My dad passed away in a car accident when I was nine. My mom, dealing with her own demons, was in no state to care for us. I found myself missing nearly half of the school days between my dad’s death and the end of that school year.
In my heart, I have always been a nurturer and I felt a sense of responsibility that no child should ever have to shoulder. I would stay home to ensure that my younger siblings had food to eat. And then, it took a turn for the worse. My mom spent all of the money that was left in a single shopping spree. Bills went unpaid, and we were on the verge of losing everything—our home, the farm, and more.
It was at this pivotal moment that my extended family intervened. They insisted my mom sign guardianship paperwork, and we were sent away, each of us to different relatives. I ended up moving to California to live with an aunt and uncle, away from everything that I had ever known. My family became fragmented and estranged, a wound that continues to heal.

A Purpose Unveiled
I share this deeply personal story because it was a driving force behind my decision to enter the field of estate planning when I opened my private legal practice. I wanted to ensure that other families wouldn’t have to endure the turmoil and uncertainty my family faced after my dad’s passing. I believed in protecting families and in serving our community.
I saw estate planning as a way to make a genuine impact, to provide a shield for families during their most vulnerable moments. And so, I pursued this path with a burning passion, determined to create a positive change in the lives of my clients, in your lives.
Stepping Into a New Chapter
Yet, life has a way of evolving, and I made the decision to leave my law practice. But why? Because my mission to make a difference, to inspire you to build prosperous and meaningful lives, remains unchanged. It’s just taking a different form.
I am on a mission to educate our community (and everyone in the world, if I can) about building lives that are not only prosperous but also authentically aligned with who you truly are. My journey has led me here, to “Purposeful Happiness,” where we will embark on a transformative journey together.
A Personal Note
On a personal note, I’m a husband and a father. My family brings a poignant awareness to my work—that building the lives we dream of isn’t just about us; it’s about the people we love the most too. The lives we create won’t just benefit us directly; they will be a gift to those we leave behind. This is a truth I hold dear and one that guides my mission.

Join Me on This Journey
So, that’s a bit about me and the story behind “Purposeful Happiness.” I hope that by sharing my journey, you’ll feel a closer connection to the mission we’re embarking on together.
